So... what are we supposed to run this monstrosity on? The G5 QUADS had a hard enough time running the first one. I can't imagine running this on an iMac or worse... a mac mini.

And people kept telling me that OSX and iOS weren't going to merge in any meaningful manner for years ahead, if ever. Yeah right. I'd bet the one after this has them nearly fully merged and I mean towards iOS for the most part. OSX will be dumbed down to the lowest common brain cell and you won't be able to get free/open software anymore. It'll have to come through the App Store or not at all. Wait and see. That is the point I'll be moving on.

It is very unlikely that Apple's engineering and marketing would destroy what they've worked to build for so long, IMHO. Is this going to be used ultimately to rate posters (kind of like the Apple site for one example)?
That's the "reputation system" question. I continue to dislike the idea that being a member is a competition (even though for fun I track statistics on who posts the most).

I do think there should only be "ups", but the icon could be a checkmark. When you click it some subtext would appear below/next to it. Something like "You liked this comment" or "You agree with comment" or "This comment was helpful".
Those are both worthwhile ideas. Most uses of the votes would be to identify good posts, not single out bad posts, so positive votes provide the more useful information. The data is there to tell you how you voted so feedback on your own vote seems like a nice touch.
Perhaps allow a post that receives a certain number of dislikes to be "hidden" from a general view unless someone decides to view it by clicking on a link.
I wouldn't favor an automatic system like this. Since you can't tell the reasons for people's votes, it could eliminate less popular posts in debates, leaving you unable to follow the discussion. And if all visible posts agree with each other, why have a discussion at all?
If there was such a system, I think it should be entirely voluntary, e.g., you can ask to see only certain posts based on votes. But I think the back-and-forth nature of discussion, with users quoting and building on previous posts, would make this less useful than it sounds. Perhaps it would be worthwhile having a User Profile setting to hide the voting system completely from users who aren't interested in using it. But we have to put our programming resources where they will do the most good.
Like some of the posters here I can think of ways to slice and dice the data, (what threads in a given forum have the highest percentage of positive-rated posts?) and ways to collect other information (rating posts by multiple criteria, e.g., "helpful") but the system has to be kept simple to work in practice. That's one argument in favor of having the arrows in all forums. But perhaps we'll learn that voting does more harm than good in certain forums, e.g., in political discussions.
Remember that forum features are designed to provide benefits to the overall membership. Your comments in this thread help us find the best ways to do that, so thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The apple store at Southpoint (Durham, NC) has no new hardware yet:( . Worse, out of the four (maybe five - might have missed one) 23'' displays two are obviously pink. I even pointed that to one of their geniuses about a month ago. She had responded, "yeah, I see that", but the same pink displays are still there to see... Is that ignorance or arrogance, I wonder.
Hopefully, they will soon be replaced with defect-free ones from the new iteration.

Hello all! This is an interesting debate... I think both OSes will be powerhouses by the time they're released. However... Microsoft's upping the ante with Windows 8, it seems. I can go to View --> Organize Alphabetically on my SL MBA. Same result. All icons, no categories.
I've never seen this before, but it's not new to this Lion build.
I think arrange alphabetically was there in 10.0. It definitely was in 10.3, just checked :).

I'm not sure I understand the people who (a) don't believe this is coming soon, or (b) don't believe it's coming at all because "people won't use it - it's too small." That's garbage.
Not everything Apple releases has to be an "earth shattering" revolution. Some stuff can just have a niche market and be better than what's out there. They're in it to make money first and foremost. And frankly, if people could carry an iPod-sized object, with wireless headphones, and that could play widescreen movies on a 4" or so screen (AND, oh by the way, carry their iTunes library to boot), it would be the death of the portable DVD player.

No need to worry. If you have a retail copy of the game you can play before the official release date without any issues.
Just out of curiosity, where did the games that have already been delivered come from? I ordered through Amazon with the delivery date shipping option so I won't have mine until tomorrow. If there's a place that tends to ship early I may use them next time.

I don't really see why anyone thinks that Apple is not taking responsibility what's going on with the iPhone 4. They are saying that this signal attenuation is a problem, but that's it's not uncommon in regards to cell phones and that other reputable companies make devices with similar problems. This, in my opinion is great PR. They are bringing the topic down to a relatable level where most people can see that it's not because they don't care about the their products anymore or are not worried about maintaining their good image. Does anyone seriously believe they rushed this out just to get some more money without properly testing it? I have spent a lot of time with the new iPhone and have noticed that it performs incredibly well and that the supposed "signal attenuation" issue people blew out of proportion is something I have to go out of my way to achieve. Sure I might accidentally do it a few times in the phones life time, but I already had minor hiccups with the 3GS that didn't make the phone worthless. Honestly, if the phone bothers anyone that much, just get that free bumper. And I believe Apple is offering a money back option for returning the phone.

with regards to kanye's appearance at the special event, it was okay i guess. he is one of the most 'happening' people in music so it was a good move by apple to pick someone different to who they normally do. plus i guess it woke the crowd up! ;)
However, i think it would've been cool to get madonna there. she's probably liked a lit more than Kanye. but giving anyone a madonna performance would put a smile on their face..and thats exactly what you want to do at a media event - make the journalists happy. i guess she was just way too busy or she commanded some crazy fee..

As for your code, you still have not really given us a clear indication of at what stage you are now and what isn't working. Now we know you want to do a sort of count down timer. I'm guessing you're trying to make a cooking timer kind of app since you said you were a pastry chef and that was what your first app was based on. Is this correct ? (<-- not a quiz question).
Now, what is not working ? Is the timer getting created ? Is it calling the method identified by the target and selector attributes when the interval you specified ends ? Is it repeating or not repeating (depending on how you set the repeat parameter on it) ?
When a timer repeats, it will simply call back the selector in the target specified.
Does your button that "cancels" it call your cancel method ? What have you done to check this ?

That comment about not including the burner is interesting, and I'm at least trying to give it some more thoughtful consideration. Who really needs to burn 30 - 50 GB of data? For backup solutions, wouldn't just getting a huge external hard drive be more practical?
Anyone who owns a video camera and uses it will have way more then 30 to 50 GB of data. Mini DV camera make 12Gb of data per hour. If you own a DSLR and shoot in RAW format the image files are on order of 10MB each. My music colection is 50GB.
I do use a hard drive to do backups but there is a basic rule in the computer industry that data is not safe unless it exists in three copies and at two physical locations. How many 500GB hard drives do you want to own? What about photos. Peope like to think they will keep these for 50 or 90 years. You need a very robust backup system if the data are to last that long. Some of the ways data has been lost historically is by theft, fire or flood.
